I remember when I was 15 years old and had a huge crush on Emma, a girl who lived near me. She would save me a seat on the school bus every day and I would sing to her all the way to school. (The song was falling in Love again.)

Our friendship was strong since we grew up together from primary school and now into high school. I can remember to this day (more than four decades later) the way she looked and talked. I remember always wanting to kiss her very large, very full lips that she always kept painted perfectly. (She never knew I wanted to kiss, and I don’t think she felt the same way.)

One day when school let out early, my good friend, Carl, and I asked Emma and her sister, Tracey, to go with us to the beach. They accepted and away we went. Emma and I shared a blanket and soaked up the afternoon sun. The surf was light and few seagulls dotted the sky.

I moved closer to Emma and began looking deeply into her big blue eyes. She didn’t seem to mind and I thought to myself, ‘This is it. The moment I have been dreaming about for years.’ I moved to within an inch of her lips, and then it happened.

A seagull let it rip! Splat!

The moment with Emma was over.

We remained friends through high school, but I never had an opportunity to spend more time with her. So, I never got that kiss I longed for – and never will. But I still remember those beautiful lips.
